Entry Rules

Eligibility/participation

1. This is an amateur photography competition. Nevertheless, if the persons complying with the eligibility criteria (see 2.) work as professional photographers, they will not be excluded.

2. The competition is universally open to amateur photographers, and in particular includes:

  • Current students and alumni of the European Master's Degree in Human Rights and Democratisation, E.MA;
  • Current and former participants in the EIUC Summer School on Cinema and Human Rights.
  • Students and alumni of the Regional Master's Programmes in Human Rights and Democratisation;
  • Students of the EIUC and E.MA participating Universities.


3. To comply with Italian privacy laws, participants who register on the website must agree to EIUC handling their personal data and publishing their original material. Participants must be the 100% owners and creators of all photos they upload and must guarantee they are not committing copyright infringement.


General rules

4. The theme of the Visualising Democracy and Human Rights photo competition is: "human rights in the making".


5. Prize is awarded for a single picture.


The photos must be accompanied by:

  • a paragraph (maximum 100 words in English or French) explaining the representation of democracy and human rights - images of social inclusion.
  • a caption to include the subject, date and location. 

6. Single pictures must have been taken after 1 January 2008.

7. The number of images submitted by one participant is restricted to one.

Material specifications

8. Please upload Digitial entries only. Prints and Slides will not be accepted. 

9. Originals must be a minimum of 3MB and 300dpi. Images must be saved in JPEG with the quality set on high/8. An embedded RGB color profile or greyscale must be used. Do not use CMYK.

10. Only single-frame images will be accepted. Composite photographs and manipulation of digital entries are excluded.

11. Manipulation of digital entries is subject to restrictions. The original structure of a digital image must not be altered.


Submission of entries

12. Entries can only be uploaded by registered members online to our server as indicated on the www.visualisingdemocracy.org website. (See the "REGISTER" menu). Entries submitted by e-mail or regular post will not be accepted.

13. The closing date for the EIUC photo competition Visualising Democracy and Human Rights is 30 June 2009. All entries must have been uploaded by this date.

14. The winner will be contacted immediately once the results of the competition have been announced. He/she will be requested to submit material of reproduction quality, a curriculum vitae and a biography.

15. Entries will not be returned. EIUC reserves the right to dispose of the material. The participants agree to give their images free of rights for the purpose of promoting the activities of EIUC in all media worldwide and in perpetuity.

16. EIUC reserves the right to cancel the competition if insufficient high quality entries are received.

17. EIUC has the right to reproduce, distribute and exhibit the winning entries in conjunction with its activities worldwide and in perpetuity.

18. The conditions set out in these Entry Rules and on the Entry Form are binding.
